How "Economists" Calculate Child Support
What we want to know is the true cost of raising children as a function of the income of the parents. However no such precise data exist. We have to infer the cost of raising children from the consumer expenditure surveys (which were never intended to be used for this.) Once we have figured out the "cost of raising children" we can set up guideline tables and deduce which parent should pay what amount.

Should Retirement Benefits or Financial Losses be Included When Calculating Child Support?
I have a full-time job and an Air Force retirement. My ex-wife was not married to me during any of my Air Force time. I also own, but have first mortgages on, some rental properties. Over the past 3 years, the real estate market has been very difficult and I've suffered negative income on the properties from vacancies and repairs.

Why Isn't Child Support Tax Deductible or Pre-Tax?
Why is not that child support pre-tax? It only makes sense that child support being based on gross income would be deducted pre-tax. Why is it taxable for a noncustodial parent and non-taxable to a custodial parent? I am so confused. What can I do to fix this?
